Attend a Langmore Foundation FEES Course
The Langmore Foundation FEES Course is a 2-day basic course taught by Dr. Susan Langmore and/or by her speech pathology faculty from Boston University Medical Center, Stanford University, or the San Francisco VA. When possible, guest speakers from Boston Children's Hospital provide a pediatric lecture at the Boston courses. The participants are mainly SLPs with a range of FEES experience - from no experience to those who are currently using FEES. Most of the attendees have experience performing modified barium swallow studies and are ready to add FEES to their daily practice. Many SLP graduate students also attend, since these courses are a fantastic compliment to their graduate training. Physicians who are interested in adding FEES to their daily practice may also attend the course. These MDs often come as a SLP-MD team, which is an excellent model since they are able to learn from each other both at the FEES course and subsequently in daily practice.
The first day of the course entails 8 hours of lecture and covers the basics of FEES: the anatomy and physiology of swallowing seen endoscopically, FEES protocols, scoring examinations, and using endoscopy as a treatment tool. The second day is divided into hands-on training in the morning, followed by an additional 4 hours of lecture that includes case studies and scoring practice, administrative considerations in setting up a FEES program, risks and safety, and billing. Many videos are shown during the 12 hours of lecture so that the participants can view first hand what is being discussed in lecture. An extremely valuable part of the course is the 4 hours of hands-on training where the participants will have practice passing the endoscope under the direct mentorship of experienced speech pathologists. A range of FEES systems allows participants to test various types of equipment. The typical participant will have 5-8 mentored passes of the laryngoscope so that the initial level of comfort and skill can be attained. The hands on experience occurs in rotating small groups where technique and expert coaching are prioritized over rapid insertion and removal of the endoscope. The registration cost is $600 per person, and discounts are typically available if multiple people from the same institution attend a given course. This program is offered at 1.50 ASHA CEU's (Intermediate Level, Professional Area), and a certificate of completion is provided to participants who compete all parts of the 2-day course.
